Getting Skilled – Unlearn And Relearn After The Pandemic

Image
Portfolio Update I was recently reading LinkedIn for skills that employees must acquire as working professionals and freshers, especially after the pandemic, when so many jobs have become redundant, new jobs have cropped up and some have seen modified working styles and requirements. The article focussed on the PM's statement, on ‘the importance of getting skilled, reskilled and upskilled as the need of the hour.’ Dr. Manish Kumar, MD of National Skill Development Corporation, in an interview, stated that, ‘the industry requires us to upgrade’. While, hard skills or technical skills, in-demand, vary from logistics, AI, analytics, machine learning, BFSI, data science; employers are also seeking soft skills for their workforce .  Some of these skills, like communication, are learnt as a result of being taught and with practice. But others, like empathy, adaptability, ability to manage change, growth mindset, are more of personality traits, according to me. Yes, we do teach these

Victory of Virtue over Vice..Killing the Ravana within you...

Image
Each one of us has a good and evil within us. The world is made up of both and this 'good' or the virtue, and 'vice' or the evil is what ultimately runs the entire show. These voices within us make us what we are and fuel our actions. Killing the Ravana Within This voice within us, what we call as our conscious tells us what is ‘the right’ on every occasion. Still why is there so much wrong happening in the world? Let me get into the crux of what I am laying out in front of you. Here I will use various examples which I have experienced, read about and seen happening in the real world. I will refrain for naming or pointing out to any person or social strata. 26 th July, 2005, Mumbai was hit by an unimaginable gush of water from the heavens. The situation went out of control within few hours. Trains halted, buses stopped running, private transport seemed impossible. I personally saw the water level rise as I waited with 4 of my friends at the railway station, for the

Adaptive Nature of the Mind

In my last post on Contextual Learning , I discussed the learning which happens when a person is exposed to a different environment in his lifetime, and how that fills up his life canvas with different learnings. Today let me sneak-peek on learning as a process of evolution. As a species, humans have learnt various behaviours during the evolution process. For example, have you ever thought why a red cross is used to represent medical professional organisations, hospitals, clinics ? It is because red is a colour representing danger.  Reaction Time to Colour Red We are aware, that signs and symbols convey meaning, and that is how they are created and designed. Did human beings all of a sudden, one fine day, decide to have a red cross as a sign for the hospital? Well no. The story behind the symbol is very much a part of the evolution process. When the pre-historic man went hunting, he realised that there was blood during an injury or when prey was killed. Blood, being red was taken as

Contextual Learning

We are a 'Blank Sheet' You are having a white sheet..a full scape blank with which you can do many things. You may choose to draw an apple, an earthen pot or a classic scenery with mountains, a river and a house, which every kid learns to draw at school. But what if you are given a pre-existing figure or drawing on the sheet, and asked to improvise it. Or if you are given an idea of what is required and you are asked to draw accordingly? Then, in that case, your mind will work within those constraints.  Life also unfolds similarly. As children, we have a white sheet in front of us, a full scape blank sheet. We are free and wild. We love to explore, by nature we are curious. A kid will run after the cockroach, the mother will shout and scream, that is when the kid will learn that behaviour too and react probably the same way the next time he sees a cockroach. As we grow up many such constraints are laid upon us by our family and society. Now that white sheet has been filled gr

The Risk of Behaving Irresponsibly…

Lockdown Lifted Since the lockdown is lifted by the Government and normalcy has been resumed, many have taken the period of lockdown like a by-gone. It's like become a thing of the past and they want to forget the few months when they were confined and regain their freedom entirely. It's not actually wrong to feel that way. We all want to refrain from getting into a lockdown situation again and also want to forget the ill effects of the pandemic on all the aspects of our lives. That includes family life, social life, economic downturn, psychological trauma which we faced. Yes, we want to forget all of it. Which is fine. New Normal However, we are not realising the fact that the virus still exists in and around in the society. There are so many asymptomatic carriers who unknowingly are mixing up with other healthy individuals who have not yet come in contact with the virus. Somewhere what happened due to the lockdown is, we got scared and worried about our lives and the live

Lessons Learnt During Pandemic and How They Should Have Changed Us

Image
New Normal In the last few months, the world has seen the unexpected, unforeseen and unforgettable. This pandemic has brought us to realise how small and irrelevant our planning gets in front of the wish of nature. A single virus, manmade or natural, still in debate, caused havoc in our lives. In the name of the new normal, everything changed. However, the term new normal is not new. As per Wikipedia,   it is 'a state to which an economy, society, etc. settles following a crisis when this differs from the situation that prevailed prior to the start of the crisis. The term has been used following the financial crisis of 2007-2008, the aftermath of the 2008–2012 global recession, and now the COVID-19 pandemic.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, the term new normal has an increasing use to refer the changes of human behaviour changes during or after this pandemic. Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System anticipate that the pandemic will change daily life for most people. T

Are we trading happiness for success?

Image
This has been long due. I have been so so occupied. But I love to write. Love to express my thoughts. Like to share my views with my readers. My love for writing gives me happiness. And yes, very true, today I am writing my thoughts on happiness. I have been hearing a lot about work-life imbalance recently. In some way, I realise that I am experiencing the same also. Work from home is getting more hectic, than work from office. Defined work hours, interaction with colleagues, break times, meal times, chai pe charcha, many such elements were actually de-stressors. Work from home has become boundary-less in so many ways, extending work hours indefinitely is one boundary which is broken. To top it all we have parents, spouses, children who demand our attention too. The instability of job markets has also made people work harder than usual in their existing job roles. People have also realised the importance of up-skilling themselves. Learning new skills, keeping in mind present and futu

How precious is life for us?

Image
Step back and look inward for confidence Recent events of celebrity suicides, teens taking extreme steps in a bet or truth and dare game, and people playing blue whale to take stupid dare and stunts which risks their lives. These have forced my mind to raise the question, How precious is life for us? Here, the question is not of the life of others. That is far. But it is the question of our own life. The fetus spends nine months in the mother's womb, to fight all odds and have a life in this world. Every mother takes extreme pain to give birth, with the hope of having a healthy child. It takes years of love, nurturing, caring, learning, time, energy, responsibility and most of all patience to bring up a child. It is a mammoth task to develop a value system, get education, employment, settle in life, fulfil your duties and above all realise your dreams. And after going through the walloping and enormous series of developments and changes, we take life so lightly. Statistics sho

Adversity is a great teacher... How we must learn..

Image
For all those who have lost their jobs in the pandemic, for all those who are suffering from COVID 19, for all those who have lost their family or friends to this disease, for all those who are facing salary cuts. For all those who are struggling to get their basic necessities home, for those who are facing the anxiety of an uncertain future, for those who are facing psychological issues staying at home or the threat of being exposed to the virus at the workplace. Yes, all of you, rather all of us! I know there are many. Most of these are so common and the world has seen these adversities rise in the year 2020 by leaps and bounds .. . 1. Social life has changed to become a virtual life. 2. Parties have become online.. be it birthdays or anniversaries. 3. Religious gatherings can no more be observed.. religious festivals are celebrated only with family at home. 4. Cleaning and disinfecting home, offices, public spaces have become a norm. 5. Self-isolation even in case of cold ha
