Being Unaware And Cool About It?
This is the last part to the series of blog which I was writing related to competence. Here I will talk about unconscious incompetence. Well, as the name suggest, you are completely unaware about what are the knowledge, skills and abilities which are lacking in your portfolio to do a particular job well. This is a blind area for the individual because the individual has never set, and thought about the same in his very busy schedule.
The very basic requirement which he will need to know to fulfill a particular task and even conduct a job search for self. I've met coachees who are very difficult because they are at the basic level of understanding of their KSAs and completely in their own world. They may not even realise that I am not knowing this skill to go to the next level. Never explored the unknown and never planned to walk that path.
To them, one day, when somebody points out to them about a particular competency they lack in, or about a particular competency which they are having in them and they have not made use of it till now in their career, it's Wohooo Finally A Realisation!
If I have to revise the Steven Covey model starting with unconscious incompetence I would say that is the blind area or the blind part of the individuals personality is not what he is lacking in, it is the thought that is missing of growth mindset. And that is the worst state to be in. It's not enough to just not know and be very complacent about it. Your coach can definitely help you to extract those inner competence or incompetence knowledge and this will bring you to some kind of awareness about what you are incompetent and what you should work towards.
Secondly, where we are talking about conscious incompetence, this is a better state to be in because when you are conscious about something that you do not know you at least know what you have to work towards and you are in a better state or condition then the unconscious incompetence ones.
Where we are talking about unconscious competence this is again not a very great state, but better than the others, because you are not aware of what you already have in you and what are the uses of those knowledge skill and abilities if you know that you are possessing something which can help you on your job then it will be a great addition to your career and professional growth. A coach definitely helps you get aware of this, also if you are not conscious about it.
And the last one which I would speak about is Conscious Competence which is being aware of what KSAs one possesses. I have covered these over five blogs and this one is the last in the series.
