Victory of Virtue over Vice..Killing the Ravana within you...

Each one of us has a good and evil within us. The world is made up of both and this 'good' or the virtue, and 'vice' or the evil is what ultimately runs the entire show. These voices within us make us what we are and fuel our actions.

Killing the Ravana Within
This voice within us, what we call as our conscious tells us what is ‘the right’ on every occasion. Still why is there so much wrong happening in the world? Let me get into the crux of what I am laying out in front of you. Here I will use various examples which I have experienced, read about and seen happening in the real world. I will refrain for naming or pointing out to any person or social strata.

26th July, 2005, Mumbai was hit by an unimaginable gush of water from the heavens. The situation went out of control within few hours. Trains halted, buses stopped running, private transport seemed impossible. I personally saw the water level rise as I waited with 4 of my friends at the railway station, for their train to begin, as it was standstill for about an hour, quiet an unlikely situation for a Mumbai local. Ultimately 3 of us decided to leave the other 2 at the railway station for their train to resume, as we struggled our way through the already knee level water clogged streets. While 3 of us reached home safely, we heard stories of the other 2 ladies who were half way in the middle of 2 railway stations, in the train compartment, standing the whole night. Apparently the people who had occupied the seats were too selfish to let others take turns to sit.

While this happened, I also heard of stories of common people of various societies and colonies coming on the streets with biscuit packets and some home cooked dry food packets to distribute to the people who are stranded in buses and private cars and unable to move further.

11th July, 2006, was the day of serial train blasts in Mumbai locals. Several common people, office goers were shattered into pieces within a fraction of second. Then I heard stories of some people helping unknown travelers to the hospital, while some others were busy looting jewelry which was laying in a pool of blood around.

On so many occasions, I have seen in the news, that there has been an accident, a person is dying on the road or has slipped accidently in a water body, and instead of helping the person, onlookers have video filmed the incident only to gather some views and likes of social media.

My question is when you know, you can help, when you know you have enough, you are at an advantage over others, yet what stops you from doing so. As children we were always taught to be good to others, help the society and be courteous, but the evil within us has taken over now and become stronger, and rises to glory on so many occasions. The evil wins.

When we see injustice happening and still people are fighting for the wrong. They know that it's an attitude, a bloated ego which they are satisfying. They know it's not helping anyone and instead just spoiling relations, they still hold it against and not do the right. The evil wins.

It is so easy to symbolically kill Ravana, by building an effigy of him on the auspicious day of Dashera. But, is it so difficult to kill the Ravana within?

Even Ravana realized what wrong he had done, because of the goodness of lord Ram. He was just too arrogant and that made him do wrong. Finally, the Good within won and may it win forever in all of us too.
